Today we recover. Anna slept until 10:30 this morning, which makes up for her almost all-nighter Christmas Eve. The kids were thrilled by the surprise presents Santa brought as well as by the presents they had requested.
DJ received:
Scrabble Flash- a hit with everyone.
A dolphin pillow pet- thanks to Gram-Gram and Papa
A Bakugan scooter/skateboard
Bakugan Battle Brawlers for Wii
Toy Story 3
Harry Potter Quidditch Lego set
Bakugan Battle Arena
Helmet, elbow and knee pads
Anna received:
Rollerblades
Helmet, elbow and knee pads
Tangled DS game- from Gram-Gram and Papa
Legos- Star Wars battleship, regular, and Spongebob
Karate and Sonic Wii games
Both:
Mind Flex
Marble Race game
There's a few more things they received, but this is the gist.
We had breakfast with GG and Papa, Gramps and Uncle Brandon. Gramps, per tradition, managed to use almost all of our pots and pans within a one-hour span.
I am still in recovery mode and could sleep for 12 more hours.

Remembering fleeting moments.
I started copying old digital tapes to my computer tonight. The kids were enthralled by the characters they saw onscreen, younger versions of themselves by about 4 or 5 years. I loved hearing the sounds of DJ's "little kid" voice as he sang and danced and told me about "schoopy balls".
I loved watching Anna practice going up and down stairs, over and over gaining confidence with each step. How quickly their faces have changed, their voices, the questions they ask, and the answers they give.
How is it that each day is so full, and I tell myself "I won't forget this moment." Yet almost as soon as that is said, the moment is forgotten. I just love hearing the way DJ talked as a youngster. Anna, now 5, seems so "adult" in the way she talks, yet it is a 5 yr. old DJ that I am referring to with a youngster voice on the video. In 3 years, I am sure the video I record of Anna today will seem eerily similar.
I finally decided to print photos. I went to Costco today and picked up about 100 photos and have 175 more on their way from Shutterfly. I put the photos in an album, nothing fancy, just a "3-up" style from Archivers. Simple, yes. But it is done, and we can look back and remember, and smile at how silly we looked and dream of what tomorrow will bring.

Week in the Life-Saturday.
I slept in. I woke up and had eggs and coffee. I took a nap. Anna and Brad went to a bday party for Anna's friend. The kids and I took the dog to the vet and now I am sobbing. It "could" be hypothyroidism so the doc drew blood to test. It would explain the wound/skin infection. That is treated with medication. Cephalexin prescribed for the infection. He has moles, he needs a dental cleaning, he needs more bloodwork and updated vaccines. The moles may (probably are, based on the look the vet gave me) be cancer but no one dare speak the word, they can be biopsied, but for what reason? Surgery is out for him she said. At 11, he's old for a dog and we are entering the waters where we are weighing the cost of finding out what's wrong and treatment options vs. what is best for him. And I feel horrible as his mama that I am thinking this way.
And I hate crying.
And this feels like the start of something...and not in a good way either.

Week in the Life-Friday.
Slept in this morning which was nice. Cleaned the kids rooms till they shined (and the kids almost fainted when they saw them). Chatted with my friend Jared about taking pics for his daughter's TBall team in the near future. Right now, any extra cash is welcomed, as I am looking at 5 straight weeks of the kids being home with me all day, every day this summer. I love my children. I really do. But 5 weeks? Thirty-five days.
Picked up the kids from school. DJ had a great Friday: aced his spelling and math tests and was also named a PBS Student of the Week. This week focused on behavior in the office. Great job DJ! His school has a "motto": Be Kind. Be Safe. Be Productive.
BE PRODUCTIVE:
State your business clearly.
Wait your turn.
Tell the truth.
The three of us went back to the Farm Park for the second time this week. The kids love the monkey bars and play on them until their arms can't take any more. One smart fella sets up his hot dog cart around 4pm, and today was a great day for business. Sunny, mild, slight breeze...aaaahhhh...
So guess what the kids had for dinner?
Our puppy dawg, who is 11 years old now, was licking and scratching a spot on his belly. There's a small, raw wound there, so I called my vet-tech sister for advice. I shaved the area, cleaned it, applied some Neosporin, and taped a sock to his back left paw. Just a reminder- my hubby is not good as a medical assistant. He tries, but he is not good. Bubsy is resting and has left the area alone. I have scheduled an appt with the vet for tomorrow afternoon just to make sure everything is ok. He is losing a lot of his fur and seems to be losing weight, which makes me want to take him in and not take him in at the same time.
Brad has had a relaxing evening filled with 2 of his favorite things: the NFL draft and a Red Wings playoff game. Make that 3. The kids didn't fight at all today.
As for me, well, that's for another day.

Week in the Life-Thursday.
Well two days of taking pics of preschoolers left me lacking in the taking pics for myself department. So for today's breakdown:
0745: Wakeup
0800: Jeeves service. Coffee and 2 fried eggs. Check emails, Facebook.
0830: Shower
0915: Anna and I arrive at school. She is my photography assistant for the day.
0930-1100: Finish up photos of children & staff. Ms. Antoinette saves the day with her talent in making children really smile. She is due within a week and either she's really that energetic or really good at faking it! I breathe a huge sigh of relief, then we plot to make millions in our new photography biz.
1115: Car wash. A great way to waste 30 minutes and feel like I accomplished something in a given day. My mom used to call some of the scrubber thingydoos "the octopus". Just so you know Mom, my kids call them the octopus too :)
1145: Pick up Anna's friend M. for an afternoon playdate. M's mom looks very relieved to have a few hours without the toddler in the house.
1200: McDonald's playscape. Lunch: Chicken nugget Happy Meals for the girls, 1/4 pounder with cheese for me. And a large iced tea. Filled to the brim with ice. The drink was refreshing, the burger was not.
1245: Girls are bored with the playscape.
1300: Home, call Brad. He offers to come home for a couple hours then go back into work. I was so wired yesterday that I didn't fall asleep until about 0300 or so, and I was dragging.
1315-1345: Chat with Stef. Whoops. Naptime can wait ;)
1345-1600: Nap. Not well. Felt like I couldn't catch my breath. Woke up gasping for air, was dreaming about same. Contemplate borrowing Brad's CPAP. Nix idea.
1600: Brad calls wondering where M lives. He mixed up her and another friend's street names. Reroute.
1630: Jeeves brings the Deej and Anna-nanner home, chocolate ice cream in hand. Mind you, one scoop, but I feel the old weight creeping back. Need to hit the gym in the a.m. I just need to go back for a few days in a row and I will be hooked again. But getting the momentum going is tough! Have the pole down in the basement. The kids use it more than I do. Is that a good thing???
1730: Make dinner-spaghetti. Brad was an angel and cleaned the stove earlier, but the water from the sponge got into the electronic ignition part, so the stove is unplugged for now, as it keeps setting off the GFCI. This is why I love a gas stove. All you need is a match and the stove still works!
After that, the kids let me go upstairs to finish the proofs and were quiet! Are we entering the golden years of childhood before all of the hormones hit? I'll count my blessings.
Brad got home around 1830 and the NFL draft started at 1900. He is in heaven. Once again, he dreams, there is hope for the Detroit Lions reaching the Super Bowl.

Week in the Life- Wednesday
Today was one of those days that kept me moving the entire time. Woke up, showered, coffee, then out the door with Anna at 0830 to go to her school and take pics for all of the classrooms. Ms. Antoinette was a godsend, standing behind me and engaging the children as I snapped their photos. When she was in the room, the other children would sit quietly and listen as she talked with the "portraitee". When she wasn't with me, well...let's just say I really wanted a stiff drink. And I don't drink. ok. Rarely.
110 proofs from today's shoot. Tomorrow will be about 20-30 children.
After that I went home, grabbed a quick lunch (reheated burger) then headed out for an appt.
My appt. was downtown, and I was struck, as I always am, by the areas of beauty and decay in the city. Church. Party store. Church. Party store. Cash in your EBT/Bridge card for 1% transaction fee signs.
A child playing on the front steps of his house.
Temple Beth-El's former house of worship, a beautiful building even as it sits vacant, had been sprayed with graffitti on one corner. And your point was Mr. Artist?
Wayne State University and the Medical Center area was very busy and made for some entertaining people watching. I really need to keep my giggles to myself.
I am frequently asked if my name is "such 'n' such". Strangers will stop and ask me directions, or ask if they know me from somewhere. Today, as I was waiting outside for my car, a cute little nun began to tell me about her cousin who had had surgery today. It was supposed to be outpatient, but to be safe the docs wanted to keep her overnight, so the little nun (she was about 4 inches shorter than me) asked for directions back to the freeway so she could go home to Ohio for the night. I just happened to have a complete map and directions from all points to the hospital campus and gave it to her, as I no longer needed it.
There have been many more "coincidences" going on in my life recently. The freaky-wackado kind that have me thinking a lot.
When I got home, pizza in hand for the kids, salad with chicken and honey mustard dressing for me, I was greeted by "MAMA!"s from both of my little monkeys. After dinner, DJ practiced his spelling with Daddy. Have to hand it to the little man-he is no dummy. Brad was in the kitchen, reading off the words and DJ was in the family room. This is really all of 6 feet apart. Not a big area. But Brad's back was to DJ, and the little stinker was glancing at his notebook for the answers, but in such a non-chalant fashion, that I didn't notice. 2 points for finesse kid.
Brad took both of the kids to the park so I could edit the photos from earlier. When they got home I was treated to my favorite chocolate ice cream from our favorite ice cream place. Frosty Freeze. I love this place- we can walk it or drive-through, but it's our neighborhood place and have I mentioned they have the best chocolate ice cream?
About 10 minutes later, Brad shouts upstairs "There's a rainbow!" Anna and I ran downstairs, DJ and Brad were outside already looking at it. I hope that I will always be able to hear in my mind their super-dupr happy shrieks. Look Mama! There's a rainbow!" My neighbors were outside as well, cameras in hand, snapping pics before it faded away.
Home. My little happy place.

A Week in My Life-Tuesday.
Got to sleep in until 0930 which was wonderful. I always get a second wind around midnight, and last night was no different.
0230: Crashed
0930: Anna wakes me. "MAMA! Wake up!" My eyes stayed asleep until I had coffee at 1000.
1130: Gram-Gram picked up Anna for their usual Tuesday girls' day out. Today's events include a trip to Costco and Chuck E. Cheese.
1200: I am determined to actually finish this Week in a Life project. Worked on more uploads and Facebook surfing.
1300: Tired. Real tired for some reason. Feel like I just want to cry hard for an hour or so.
1301: Refuse to cry. My usual MO.
1330: Lunch. Cooked up some plain hamburger meat. That's it. I like to eat fast, so this was simple.
1400: Laundry. Excuse me as I jump ecstatically!
1425: Nap is calling. Just 20 minutes.
1515: Time to go get D.J. Phone, Epipen, Camera. Check. Open door, close. Leave keys inside house. Check.
1516: Call Gram-Gram and ask if she can get D.J. No problem.
1517: Call the school to advise of mama's "whoopsy"
1525: UPS guy delivers a package that needs a signature. Jeeves had racked up some points and scored a free boom box for my iPod. YES! Our UPS guy usually comes in the morning, so it is a good thing I locked my keys in the house!
1530: Figure I might as well pull some weeds while I wait for D.J. and Anna.
1545: Take pics around the yard.
1610: Buckus loves to hang out in the yard with me when I am gardening. He's 11 years old now. I am worried about him- his face and body are thinning, as is the fur on his body. He is the best dog.
1615: D.J. is fascinated with the bugs in the dirt and wants to dig up Hammy (the dead hamster) to see if his note has turned into compost yet. Uh. no. I told him I am not going to dig up Hammy's body- he will be a skeleton and it will be gross. My mama ears then hear D.J. asking Anna to dig a hole "over here!" Nice try kid.
1630: Brad takes the kids to Anna's swim lesson. After that they'll go for dinner, then D.J. has his swim practice at 1930.

1700: Laundry. Again.
1705: My eye hurts. Bruise not too bad but darker than yesterday.
1800: Cup of coffee. Throw in another load of laundry.
1815: Wonder if I can go to Stef's now. Glee is on tonight. I went over to her place last week and watched with her and Rob. Then I proceeded to go home and stay up all night watching the previous 6 episodes on Fox online. Now I am hooked, and Tuesday night has been coined "Glee Night"
Think I'll grab a chef salad from Alex's for dinner. Yummy.
Tomorrow I will be taking school portraits for Anna's nursery school. Will be there most of the day, but hope to have some time to grab some candids of the kids if I finish early enough.

Was he looking over my shoulder?
Last night I wrote about my Uncle John and his love of music. Just before I turned off the computer for the night, I checked Facebook- purely out of habit now.
I caught a glipmse of an ad for "Peapod", a home grocery delivery service that Uncle John used. I clicked to my home page quickly, realized what I had seen and clicked the back button. The ad was gone.
I think UJ in his own way, wanted to show me that he is still here & still listening. I just need to play.

0930- wake up. Brad made sure Anna had everything she needed so there weren't any "Mommy" requests. What a treat!
1000- first cup of joe. Eyes, you can open now.
1011- When Anna sees the real Dora, she will "punch her in the head." We are watching Diego.

A week in my life, Monday.
Day one is done. It's late and I am getting tired. Anna had a field trip to the BHS where we got to hang out with the band and orchestra classes. It took every ounce of emotional strength I had not to cry as we listened to the orchestra play. No, not tears of pain from poorly played music, rather the raw, emotional kind of tears that come rushing up from deep within your soul. As the cellist next to me drew her bow across the strings, the lump grew in my throat and is here, and the tears are starting to fall as I feel the music once again. Their teacher said that the string instruments are considered to be the instruments that most closely resemble the human voice. If that is true, then the cello is the voice of my memory.
Piano music usually gets me. I am standing next to my Uncle John, watching his big burly hands make such beautiful music on the keyboard. Thick fingers that looked wider than any key- a set of hands that one would not consider "piano hands". He loved to play. He loved to sing, and boy did he sing. Were you in the middle of your favorite show when the urge to play a song from some musical of years gone by called his name? Too bad. Plan on spending the next hour with background music whether you like it or not. My mom played too. And how. Uncle John once told me when she played she would "vamp it up" and the people gathered 'round the baby grand in "the big house" couldn't help but be drawn in. She wanted me to learn...she really did.
The music from the Phantom of the Opera is what really hits me hard. Just one note, like in Name That Tune, and I am standing next to his right shoulder once again.

DJ & Mama's day at Greenfield Village
DJ had a rare day off while Anna is in school. We headed to Greenfield Village and had a lot of fun together.
- Ride in the horsedrawn carriage, the Persheron's Abe & Lincoln.
- Enjoy a ride on a 95 year-old carousel.
- A hobo lunch, which included a balogna & cheese sandwhich, string cheese, applesauce, and raisins. DJ bummed a Sprite off of his mama.
- A walk to the Smith's Creek train station and a ride on the "Edison" steam engine locomotive.
- "Try something new day". DJ got to use a printing press from 1850 and create a card with an image of the Smith Creek Station on it.
- Go pick up Anna, then drop her off for a playdate.
- Pick Anna up from the playdate, then listen to a big {I'm tired, but I won't say I'm tired meltdown} which included the "I hate you and I hate DJ" soundtrack.
- Go Shabbat with a good friend and her daughter. A 16 yr old who willingly goes to services on a Friday night. What are they doing so right???
Then go hang out, just mom's only style at my favorite local Irish Pub and listen to the band play.
Come home and snuggle sweet hubby. Early wake up in the morning- math pentathalon competition awaits DJ at 0800.

Anna's thoughts about God.
Today Anna asked me about how God makes babies. Then she proceeded to tell me that he uses super-glue. That works. Easier than explaining the birds and the bees to a not-quite 5 year-old.
She also asked if I was ever a kid. Yes, I was. Then she gave me a blank stare. I wonder how she imagines children growing into adults. If it's anything like I think, it happens very suddenly. Almost a "poof!" of magic (without the glitter) and there you are. An adult. I keep expecting to cross an imaginary line into adulthood. Admitting that I still feel like I could be in high school may cause some to conjure up scary thoughts about me and teenagers.
The beverage I am about to consume is very hot. The label says so. But what about in an hour after it has been sitting on my desk, unconsumed? Huh? What then?

Aaahhh...love is in the air.
This morning, I made pancakes and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Brad hadn't been feeling well, so the kids and I let him sleep in. Since it was Valentine's Day, we thought he might like breakfast in bed. Anna carried the orange juice (no spills), I carried the plate, and DJ wrote a note to give to Brad.
What did the love note say?
"I hope you poop out your germs."
